GOTiHe:  Two Sides of a Mountain (Part 2)

“For Compass, her journey starts within…mountains are the obstacles in life that stand between us and our true greatness.  When we get to the foot of a mountain, it always seems impossible until we are at its peak.”

Part 2:  The Climb

When she arrived, everything she envisioned and wrote in her journal just moments prior was dwarfed by the reality of standing at the actual base as her eyes climbed endlessly to the barely visible peak.

It was eerily quiet as every sound was muted by the surrounding snow, making the mountain look like it was sleeping under a fluffy white blanket.  She absorbed the peacefulness of the scenery and had a funny thought that her first step was going to wake the mountain from its sleep.  Shortly after she chuckled at the thought, the gravity of the moment started to bring fear and doubt to the surface.  “I can’t believe I’m doing this, for what? What am I trying to prove?  This is almost as bad as parachuting out of a perfectly good airplane, just to say I did it?  Although that’s next on my list of things to do.”

“OK, snap out of it. We are going to do this regardless of what I’m thinking.  I’ve prepared, and it’s either now or never.”  She could feel her body reacting to the overwhelming fear by her uncontrollable shaking.  She held her hand up and tried to stop it from shaking, but it was out of her conscious control. Her fear seeped into her body and warned her of the impending danger she was about to experience.

She took a deep breath and begun to calm her nerves.  She let out a tribal yell to boost her inner greatness and stepped forward.  Her mind was racing, and her heart was starting to join in as well.  She thought, “I’m here, alone on an adventure that I’m sure will teach me more about myself and who I am like many times before.  In fact, I’m already learning because I actually made it this far, and I can’t stop now because I’m not a quitter.”

Her internal pep talk kicked her into gear, and she continued forward through the mounds of snowdrift until she reached the first climb.  It felt like the mountain really did wake up as its terrain changed from a serene setting to strong winds blowing in all directions.  She said out loud and apologetic, “Sorry for waking you, mountain!”

Knowing that her short window of time before the sun goes down was only going to get shorter due to the weather randomly changing in an instant, she started her ascent.  She knew that she must manage her time efficiently, for she may be among the list of the many who didn’t make it.  Climbing a mountain is not a simple task; it is very tedious and requires extreme discipline and determination.  It challenges all of the senses and stretches the mind to go beyond its false boundaries and beliefs of what is possible.

Stay tuned for Part 3:  Ascension.
