GOTiHe:  Two Sides of a Mountain (Part 3)

“For Compass, her journey starts within…mountains are the obstacles in life that stand between us and our true greatness.  When we get to the foot of a mountain, it always seems impossible until we are at its peak.”

Part 3:  Ascension (“the act of rising to an important position or a higher level”)

Compass found her rhythm, and her confidence was at its height when suddenly her faith was put to task.  She heard a slight cracking sound, and within moments a medium-sized icicle slammed into the safety line and knocked her upper body backward as her hand slipped off of her ice ax.  Her father always said to make sure you get into the habit of practicing as it increases your reflexes.  Fortunately, she instinctively clawed the handle before her hand fully slipped and pulled her body back.  Her feet were spiked deep into the ice and would not have dislodged, possibly breaking both legs or causing major damage to her knees and ankles.  She paused for a moment, realizing that she was halfway up and that there was no one to help for days or weeks if a tragedy were to occur.

As she was racing against time, she found that her initial path had to be re-routed because the weather broke its pattern, and it would have been dangerous to climb directly into strong winds.  This brought her to an unexpected overhang which left Compass caught between two dangerous options.  She started thinking about what could be worse than this and immediately stopped that thought because she didn’t want to find out.  Murphy is always lurking around all corners of the earth, waiting to show you exactly what could be worse than what you’re going through, so it is best to keep it to yourself.

Compass was at a standstill, trying to decide her next move, and suddenly had a strong feeling she was being watched.  As far as she could remember, Compass was in tune with her feelings and could always sense others people’s energy around her, and this was one of those moments.  The mountain was cunning and always had a trick up its sleeve while keeping a poker face not to reveal its hand.  Compass began to feel uncomfortable, not knowing if she was sensing impending danger or if her mind was playing tricks on her.

Unknown to Compass, she had two onlookers below negatively criticizing her efforts. Knowing that they were too scared even to attempt the feat Compass had embarked on, the onlookers tried to marginalize her bravery and courage.  One of the critics explained to the other how Compass’s climb was easy and that he didn’t finish because it wasn’t worth it, which was a roundabout way of saying he quit.  The other was explaining how it could be done and how they believe that Compass couldn’t make it because of the many people who said it couldn’t be done.  These statements were expressions of their own fears and lack of confidence projected onto Compass.  Negative energy radiates its energy into everything around it in the same way that positive energy does. Knowing this, Compass always made a habit of listening to her inner voice, but this time it was strange because there wasn’t anyone around her, and she still felt it.  She paused to gather her thoughts and felt the need to hear her voice out loud. “The altitude isn’t high enough to cause hallucinations, but it feels like I’m channeling the emotions of someone else.”  The thought of it seemed farfetched, so she ignored it and continued on.

Compass was growing exhausted from the unexpected overhang and brutal weather patterns and had to keep herself together in order to achieve her goal of reaching the peak.  All she could think about was finding a spot to sip her hot tea to relax her rushing mind.  She felt anxious as she remembered once taking the bus into the city and getting caught in endless traffic, feeling like there was no way these cars wouldn’t be in the exact same spot for days.  This was exactly how she felt. Climbing is a bunch of little gains, which sometimes feels like you’re stuck in traffic and will never get to where you are going.

Stay tuned for Part 4:  Transcendence (“Existence or experience beyond the normal or physical level”)
