GOTiHe:  Two Sides of a Mountain (Part 4)

“For Compass, her journey starts within…..mountains are the obstacles in life that stand between us and our true greatness.  When we get to the foot of a mountain, it always seems impossible until we are at its peak.”

Part 4:  Transcendence (“Existence or experience beyond the normal or physical level”)

Compass is slowly starting to lose herself and can’t seem to focus with all of the feelings and weird thoughts flowing through her consciousness.  She is starting to have doubts about the entire climb and now understands why it’s called Dead Man’s mountain, but she knows that she can’t turn back now. “I’m exhausted!” she says to herself as she is feeling the urgent need to take a break and get her much needed rest after realizing that she missed more than a few of her planned breaks.

She tries to take a pause to get herself together and just as her heart rate begins to lower, she starts to feel pain in her left calf.  The only thing she can think happened is that the fallen ice at the start of her climb must have hit her leg.  Her heart rate went right back up as she worried about how this is going to affect her climb.  She yelled “Why now!?”  That incident happened hours ago, so she felt it must have been the adrenaline rush from the fear of falling when she almost lost her grip on the ice ax.

She needs to quickly take care of her calf to prevent it from getting worse.  Her concerns rose sharply as all of this happened while she was hanging horizontally under a seemingly impossible overhang that was straining her muscles.  Her mind kicked into extreme survival mode, making her feel like a wounded warrior on a life or death mission where she has to fight tooth and nail to conquer the overhang.  She barely clears the overhang and sprawls to a patch of rock to catch her breath.

She is feeling dizzy, light headed, and confused and can barely see in front of her.  As she tried to focus she was able to see an opening through the snow as if there was a tunnel leading to an area where she can rest.  She did a double take to make sure she wasn’t hallucinating and everywhere she looked she couldn’t see more than 10 feet in front of her, but the opening showed a place for her to rest that was at least 50 feet away. She asked herself, “How is that possible?” but out of desperation she didn’t question it further and figured she could get there and rest, sip some of her tea, and attend to her injury.

As soon as she headed toward the rest area, everything went silent.  She wondered what was happening, and she could hear her heartbeat and quickly noticed that it started speeding up.  She tried to take a step but couldn’t move.  She saw a glow emanating from the rest area through the tunnel and saw a yellow flash.  She heard a voice with a stark resemblance of her grandmother.  She called out, “Grandma?, Is that you?” She was thinking this must be a dream or that she had died on the mountain and this was what the end looks like.  Her eyes felt like they were closed but she was looking at the glowing rest area through the tunnel.  She couldn’t make out anything the voice was saying, nor could she move her head, but her eyes caught a vision of herself as a child right before a second flash of blue light engulfed her and she found herself lying on the cold ground in the rest area, exhausted.

Stay tuned for Part 5:  The Descent.
