GOTiHe:  Two Sides of a Mountain (Part 5)

“For Compass, her journey starts within…..mountains are the obstacles in life that stand between us and our true greatness.  When we get to the foot of a mountain, it always seems impossible until we are at its peak.”

Part 5:  The Descent (“the transmission of qualities, property, or privileges by inheritance”)

Compass looked around and was totally confused as to what just happened moments ago. She remembers everything as if it really happened but can’t rationalize what just took place. She is exhausted from the climb and feels that there is something different about her. She shrugs her shoulders in disbelief and writes it off as a combination of dreams and hallucinations, maybe do the thinner air, and that she believes she passed out. She gets up and brushes herself off, checks her equipment, and finds that her left calf is no longer in pain. She then recalls seeing a vision of herself as a child at the rest area and reminded herself again that this is why it’s called Dead Man’s mountain, because she thought she actually died.

She’s been climbing for hours and the visibility comes and goes as she braves the continuous changing weather patterns and obstacles presented by the mountain. She knows that she can’t be far from the top, but doesn’t know how much more she has to go. The fact that she could be next to the peak and not knowing it is excruciating and frustrating because she wants this climb to be over and done with now. She is already envisioning herself with her favorite socks on, wrapped in a warm fuzzy blanket, sipping on hot chocolate next to the fireplace listening to the crackling wood, but here she is dangling from a mountain, freezing, and listening to the crackling of ice while sipping on her watered down tea.

She gets everything in place and continues her climb before stumbling upon a makeshift tombstone that she dusted off to read the engraved, “10 Feet from the Peak, He Forever Sleeps”. She sends her condolences and realizes at that moment that she reached the peak of Dead Man’s Mountain. She then understood the man’s fate, because she couldn’t tell how much further she had to go, which makes the climb seem endless. The sad thing is he actually reached the top, and didn’t know it and died a just few steps from the finish line.

As she took her final step upon the mountain top, her body was invigorated, full of positive energy, and her spirit was lifted high above the peak. She joyously screamed and cried at the same time. “I did it! I did it!” She yelled and heard the mountain echo back “You did it! You did it!” This was such a great feeling. All that she endured and suffered to get to this point was now behind her. She learned a lot about herself and how she handles adversity and what it takes to persevere through it. She felt that she reached her mental breaking point and was able to push through it believing in herself. She felt her mind uncontrollably drift in and out of focus many times causing her to be discouraged in the face of danger, wanting to turn back but kept the faith and moved forward one step at a time. The voices of self-doubt were silenced and a new voice emerged. She roared with a great voice, “You got to believe that you can achieve! The UnBelievAble is even BelievAble!”

Stay tuned for Part 6:  Reverence.
